NFC compatible phones have been around since Nokia released its 6131 in 2006 but the technology has only really come into popularity with its star role in contactless payments and the impact on its environments are already being felt with American Express reporting that contactless transactions are up to 63% faster than cash and 53% faster than paying with a more traditional swipe card and as a result we are spending less time in cues and spending more money in each transaction not to mention the collateral effect of increased consumer trust in business that provide NFC payment facilities.
My personal opinion is that the previously mentioned benefits alone are enough to say that NFC smart phones are having a positive impact on our social environments. However, there are additional benefits that go beyond the check out counter as smart phones with near field communicator technology are helping to break down many of the traditional barriers between information demand and supply by providing users with direct passive access to their desired information within milliseconds via advertising media such as smart posters, smart business cards, NFC tags, peer to peer transfers and even clothing without having to shift through pages or search engine results.
