Are NFC Smart phones increasing the Digital Divide?
In previous posts I have written about the positive impacts that NFC smart phones are having on the environments they are used it. However, what happens when people find themselves outside of the NFC smart phone community?
The digital divide refers to the decreased opportunities that people without technology are faced when compared to those who do have access to the technology for example in 20th century the divide was in regards to those with access to a telephone and those without. However, in our technologically dense society, is it possible that NFC Smart phones are increasing the gap?
When I asses the current level of impact NFC smart phones are having in Australia I can say pretty comfortably say that for at least the present moment anyone without a NFC compatible smart phone is most likely not missing any abundant opportunities. However, when I consider the growing popularity of the technology along with the increasing rate of industry adoption, I have very little doubt that in the near future things like NFC advertising, coupons, reward apps and loyalty cards will significantly increase the opportunities for their users to be privy to special offers, freebies and information which will see the digital divide increase between NFC compatible smart phone users and the rest of the smart phone population.
